The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Republic of Turkey. The two countries have maintained a friendly relationship since the sinking of the Ertugrul in 1890, and various events are planned to be held to celebrate this memorable year with as many people as possible and to further promote exchanges between the two countries. As one of these commemorative events, Japan Day will be held in the capital Ankara and Bursa.
After the end of World War I, the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923 by Turkey's first president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, with Ankara as its capital. Since becoming the capital of Turkey, Ankara has developed rapidly and grown into Turkey's second largest city, and is the most Europeanized city in Turkey.
Bursa is famous as the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, and is an ancient city rich in history and nature that was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014. It is Turkey's fourth largest city with a population of approximately 2.34 million.
In Ankara and Bursa, where Eastern and Western civilizations collide, with the cooperation of the Turkish-Japanese Friendship Organization, visitors will be able to see, experience and feel Japanese culture through performances, exhibitions and workshops.
We look forward to your participation in the Japan Day program, which will deepen mutual understanding between our two countries and further deepen friendly relations with Turkey.
